How to Make a Crepe Paper Sunflower

I love all flowers but particularly sunflowers. I came across this tutorial on YouTube by Abbi Kirsten and decided to create my own SVG to help out with the creation of these terrific crepe paper sunflowers. It was such a fun project to do but a little time consuming. Regardless, it was well worth it. Since my dining room is decorated with all kinds of sunflowers these fit perfectly and really brightened up the room. If you would like more flower making projects check out my paper daisies.

What you will Need: How to Make a Crepe Paper Sunflower

Step 1: Download the SVG

Download the SVG to your computer by clicking on the link. Unzip the file.

Step 2: Upload the SVG to Design Space

Using the upload button on the left side menu of Design Space upload the SVGs of the small petals, large petals and leaves following the prompts. Choose on Mat then browse materials for crepe paper and choose that.

Step 3: Cut the Petals and Leaves using your Cricut

There are two sizes of petals, small and large. Cut 14 small yellow petals and 12 large yellow petals. Also, cut 12 green small petals. While you are at it cut the leaves from the same green you cut the green petals. Because the leaves are variegated they take a little while to cut. You will need a rotary blade and a pink fabric cutting mat for this process. You can also cut these out by hand if you like using the PDF file.

Step 4: Hand Cut the Centers

The crepe paper for the center needs to be cut by hand. You will need to cut eight 20″ x 2″ strips of brown crepe paper. You will also need two 20″ x 2″ strips each of yellow and black crepe paper. The best way to do this is by measuring out a 20″ piece of paper and folding it so that it is one long strip that has the 20″ side folded inward. Cut the piece in 2″ sections until you get the desired number of 20″ x 2″ strips. While the pieces are still folded, snip slices widthwise along the grain about 1/3 of the way down to create a fringe effect. Do this for all of the strips. Twist the fringe pieces to make them regular. (This step is optional.) Take your 18 gauge wire and use it as the stem of your sunflower.

Step 5: Create the Centers

Dab some hot glue on one end of the 18 gauge wire and begin to wrap four of the brown strips around the wire one at a time gluing the bottoms as you go. Then add the two black pieces. Once you have added the two black pieces add the remaining brown pieces. Finally add the yellow pieces. You can add the yellow distressed oxide to the fringe to really accent the yellow if you like. Once all of the layers are complete trim the top so that the top is even. Fan out the center.

Step 6: Add the Small Petals

If you like, add the oxide to the bottom of the petals to add dimension. Gently curl the petals outward using the Cricut scraper tool. Place the small petals on first gluing at the bottom. Overlap each petal as you go and make sure they are even.

Step 7: Add the Large Petals

Again add the oxide if you like. Gently curl the leaves outward. Add the large petals gluing at the bottom and inserting them between the smaller petals.

Step 8: Add the Green Petals

Curl the petals outward. Use 10-12 if the green petals. Glue them the to the bottom of the sunflower on the base overlapping them as you go.

Step 9: Create the Leaves

Take the leaf pieces and glue the 24 gauge floral wire to the center of the leaf. Shape the leaves by manipulating the wire. Do this for both leaves. Attach the wire to the stem of the flower by wrapping the wire around the stem.

Step 10: Wrap the Stem

Cut a piece of green crepe paper that measures 15″ x 1″. Start at the base of the sunflower and wrap the wires with the paper all the way down. Glue the bottom and tear off any excess paper. You have now finished your crepe paper sunflower. How pretty.
