What you will Need: How to Make a Side Edge Card in Cricut Design Space
- Cricut machine
- Cricut Design Space
- Image
- Card Stock
- Cricut Access (Optional)
Step 1: Choose your Image
Open Cricut Design Space and upload the image or images that you would like to use as the edge of your card. I have decided to use these cute bunnies that I got from Cricut Access. I stacked three bunnies and resized them so that they were 1.25″ x 4.5″. My card is 5″ x 5″. You can make yours whatever size you like. Stack your images so that they are as tall as you would like and group them using the group button. Make sure that you size your image or images 1/2″ smaller than the size of your card and that your images are touching.
Step 2: Add the Offset
Select the entire image and add an offset by clicking on the offset button. Change the offset size to 0.125. Once you have added the offset select the entire image and the offset and add a second offset of 0125. Your image should now be 5″ tall with the two offsets. Change the colors of the offsets so that you can separate out the layers and keeping in mind that the first of the offsets will be the base of your image. Of course if you do not want to make two offset layers you do not have to. you can just make one and put your images directly on the card without the outline.
Step 3: Create a 5″ x 5″ Card
Go to the shapes menu and choose the square shape and create a square hat measures 5″ x 5″. Change the color to gray or another light color to make it easy to work with.
Step 4: Move the larger Offset Layer
Highlight the larger of the two offset layers and move it to the right side of the card. Remember to send the highlight layer to the front or the card layer to the back so that the offset layer is on top. Use the align tool in the top menu bar to align the offset layer to the right and to the bottom by highlighting both the offset layer and the card layer.
Step 5: Select Slice
Highlight both the card layer and the offset layer. Go to the bottom of the layers panel and click slice to slice the offset layer fro the card layer. Hide the solid colored results of the slice. In my case it is red and gray by clicking on the eye next to the layer in the layers panel.
Step 6: Contour
Do not move the card layer. Highlight the cutout layer and go to the bottom of the layers panel and click contour. The contour menu will pop up and it will allow you to select the portions of the image at the right of the card that you want to eliminate. Click on those areas then click off the panel. You will see that the right side of the card is eliminated.
Step 7: Select and Weld
Unlock the eye of the onset layer that you sliced. In my case red. It will appear in the space where the cut out was. highlight both layers and click weld to weld them together. That results in the edge of the card.
Step 8: Create the Other Half of the Card
Click on the card layer and click duplicate. Highlight both card layers and align top using the align tool in the top menu bar. Highlight the top layer and go to the top menu bar and click flip horizontal. Lineup the two card pieces back to back making sure the they are abutting each other perfectly. Go to the bottom layers panel and click weld. If you see a line in the center undo it and redo it until it is a clean surface.
Step 9: Add the Score Line
Go to the shapes menu and click the line. Make sure that it is 5″ long place it on the card. Highlight the card and the line and go to the top menu bar and click align center. Click attach on the bottom of the layers panel.
Step 10: Add the Images
Group the small offset and image together by highlighting them and clicking group in the top menu bar. Move the entire piece to the side of the card in the area that it fits. Make sure to move it to the front or the card to the back. Add text if you like. Click Make it!.
Step 11: Make it
I used standard card stock for my project. Just follow the instructions in Design Space like any other project and cut out your pieces. Clue them together and send off the card. You have now finished your side edge card using Cricut Design Space.
