What you will Need: How to Make a Layered Mandala using Cricut Design Space

Step 1: Choose your Outline Shape

You can use any simple shape to create your layered mandala. You can use one of the shapes in the shapes menu, a letter for your initial, or a shape in the images library. Just make sure that you choose a shape that is a cut shape and in one layer. Start by clicking on the images menu. Use the filters to weed out the images. I chose a dog image and selected cut only and single layer. Choose the image you want and add it to your canvas. Resize the image.

Step 2: Create the Outline

To create the image’s outline you will use the offset feature in design space. Select the image and click offset on the top menu bar. The default offset is .25. We will use that. Click apply and you will get another larger image in gray. In order to make this an outline select both the black and gray layers and click slice in the bottom layers panel menu. You will end up with three images, an outline, and two filled in images. You can delete the two filled in images.

On my image there was a small triangle left over. I need to delete that. To do that, highlight the outline and click on the contour button at the bottom layers panel. You will see the little triangle. Click on it in the side panel and it will be grayed out and disappear when you X out of the screen.

Step 3: Choose the Mandala Shapes to Fill your Image

Once again go into the images menu and use the filter to weed out the images. Make sure that whatever pattern or mandala you choose is all connected to together or you will have floating pieces. Place the pattern or mandala onto your outline shape. I used one large patterned piece but if you need more just abut them next to each other to fill the shape.

Step 4: Prepare the First Mandala Layer

Select both the outline and the pattern piece and duplicate them by clicking the duplicate button in the top right layers panel menu. Put the duplicate to the side. If you are using more than one pattern or mandala piece select them but not the image and click weld in the bottom layers panel menu. Then duplicate them.

Step 5: Contour the Image

Select the image only and click on contour at the bottom of the layers panel menu. Click hide all contours and X out of the contours panel. You will notice that your image is filled in. Click duplicate and move the copy aside.

Step 6: Create the First Mandala Layer

Select the original contoured piece and the pattern and click on slice at the bottom of the layers panel. There will be four slice results in the layers panel. Delete the layer with the pattern on the outside of the image and one of the mandala images as well as the image with the cutouts. You should have the outline and the mandala layer left.

Step 7: Add the Outline

Select the outline that you saved earlier and create a duplicate. Set it aside. Add one of the outlines to the mandala image and align them center using the align menu on the top menu bar. Weld the two pieces together.

Step 8: Contour the Remaining Image

Select the image and select contour to remove any small ares that will be difficult to cut.

Step 9: Create the Next Layer

Select the mandala image and click offset in the top menu bar. I used an offset of .15. Change the color of the offset layer.
